How We Approach Individual Psychotherapy
At The Terrebonne Group, we believe effective individual therapy is built on a foundation of genuine connection, deep understanding, and evidence-based practice. Our approach is tailored to each client's unique needs, drawing from multiple therapeutic frameworks to create personalized treatment.
What Makes Our Approach Effective
Psychodynamic & Interpersonal Focus
We help clients explore the unconscious patterns, past experiences, and relationship dynamics that influence current struggles. By developing greater awareness of these underlying factors, clients gain the freedom to make different choices and respond to life's challenges in healthier ways.
Evidence-Based Integration
Our therapists integrate approaches solidly supported by research, including psychodynamic therapy, interpersonal therapy, cognitive-behavioral techniques, and other specialized interventions. We tailor our methods to fit your specific concerns and goals rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Emphasis on Self-Understanding
We believe that lasting change comes from deep self-understanding. Our therapists help you explore the roots of your difficulties, recognize patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and develop insight into your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This self-awareness creates the foundation for meaningful, sustained growth.
Attention to Mind-Body Connection
We recognize that psychological well-being and physical health are deeply interconnected. Many clients find that addressing factors like sleep, exercise, nutrition, and substance use significantly enhances their therapy progress and supports overall wellness.
Collaborative Therapeutic Relationship
Research shows that the quality of the therapeutic relationship accounts for one-third of positive outcomes in psychotherapy. We prioritize creating a warm, respectful, and collaborative relationship where you feel comfortable, understood, and supported. Finding a good fit with your therapist is essential for successful therapy.

Frequently-Asked Questions
About Individual Therapy
How long does individual therapy take?
The duration of therapy varies based on your concerns, goals, and preferences. Some clients achieve significant progress in 3-6 months of weekly therapy, while others benefit from longer-term work. Research shows that motivated clients who actively engage in the process tend to achieve better outcomes. We'll discuss realistic timelines during your initial consultation and regularly review progress together.
How often will I need to attend sessions?
Most clients begin with weekly sessions to establish momentum and build the therapeutic relationship. As progress is made, some clients transition to bi-weekly sessions. We'll work together to determine the frequency that best supports your goals while fitting your schedule and budget.
What's the difference between a psychologist and other therapists?
Psychologists hold doctoral degrees (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) and have extensive training in psychological assessment, research, and therapy. At The Terrebonne Group, our psychologists provide evidence-based individual psychotherapy drawing from their advanced training and decades of experience. Licensed social workers also provide effective psychotherapy and bring valuable clinical expertise to their work with clients.
How do I know if you're the right therapist for me?
Finding a good fit with your therapist is crucial for successful therapy. We offer an initial consultation where you can meet with a clinician, discuss your concerns, and get a sense of whether the therapeutic relationship feels comfortable. If after the first session or two you don't feel it's a good fit, we're happy to provide referrals to other qualified therapists in the New Orleans area.
What should I talk about in therapy?
There's no right or wrong thing to discuss in therapy. Many clients begin by talking about what brought them to therapy—current struggles, symptoms, or life circumstances. As therapy progresses, you'll explore thoughts, feelings, relationships, past experiences, and patterns that relate to your concerns. Your therapist will help guide the conversation while following your lead about what feels most important to address.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Everything you discuss in therapy is confidential and protected by law. There are rare exceptions when therapists are legally required to break confidentiality (such as if there's serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult). We'll discuss confidentiality in detail during your first session.
Do you accept insurance?
We are a private pay practice and do not accept insurance directly or bill insurance companies on your behalf. However, many of our clients successfully use their out-of-network benefits to receive substantial reimbursement for therapy sessions. We provide all the documentation you need to submit claims to your insurance company and are happy to guide you through the reimbursement process.
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant online therapy for clients throughout Louisiana. Many clients find online sessions convenient and effective, particularly for those with busy schedules or transportation challenges.
