You may not have the words for what you’ve been through—and that’s okay. Trauma doesn’t always show up as a clear memory. It has a way of living in the body, in the silences, in the moments when everything feels heavier than it should.
At The Terrebonne Group, our trauma-informed therapists understand that trauma isn’t just about what happened—it’s about how those experiences continue to shape the way you feel, connect, and move through your life. You might notice it in your relationships, your sense of safety, or the way your mind and body respond to stress. None of that means something is wrong with you. It means your system adapted to protect you.
We meet you exactly where you are, without pressure to explain everything or have it all figured out. Together, we move at a pace that feels safe—helping you reconnect with yourself, rebuild trust, and begin to feel more grounded again.
It starts with taking that first step together.
What Is Trauma?
Trauma is more than a memory. It’s an experience that overwhelms the nervous system — leaving lasting imprints on how we think, feel, and relate to others. Trauma can stem from a single devastating event or accumulate across a lifetime of painful experiences. Our therapists understand that trauma looks different for every person, and we meet each client with that understanding in mind.
Common sources of trauma that our clients bring to therapy include:
- Childhood abuse and neglect
- Physical violence or sexual assault
- Domestic violence and intimate partner abuse
- Grief and sudden loss
- Accidents, illness, or medical trauma
- Community violence or disasters
- Complex and relational trauma, including complex PTSD
Trauma doesn’t always announce itself. It often shows up as anxiety, depression, anger, difficulty sleeping, or a persistent feeling of being unsafe — even in situations where you’re not. Our trauma-informed counseling services help clients connect those symptoms to their roots and begin the work of healing.
How Trauma Shows Up in Daily Life
Many adults, teens, and children who seek therapy don’t initially realize that what they’re experiencing is connected to past trauma. They come in struggling with depression, irritability, relationship problems, or physical symptoms that don’t have a clear explanation. They may feel disconnected from themselves or others, hypervigilant, or caught in cycles of behavior they can’t seem to break.
Trauma symptoms vary widely but may include persistent feelings of fear, shame, or sadness; difficulty trusting others; emotional numbness or dissociation; sleep disruption; anger or rage that feels out of proportion; and physical tension held in the body. Substance abuse, challenges in relationships, and difficulty maintaining employment or caring for children can also emerge as responses to unresolved trauma.
Our practice recognizes that trauma touches every aspect of a person’s mental health — their sense of self, their self esteem, their relationships, and their capacity for joy. We believe healing is possible, and our team is committed to helping you find it.
Who We Serve
Our counseling services are designed to support a broad range of trauma survivors across the lifespan.
Children
Trauma can profoundly disrupt a child's development and long-term mental health. Children who have experienced abuse, family violence, loss, or other distressing events may struggle with behavior, emotion regulation, school performance, and social relationships. Our therapists are trained to work with children using age-appropriate, play-informed approaches that help them process difficult experiences and build the skills they need to thrive.
We work closely with families throughout the therapy process. Parents and caregivers play an essential role in supporting their children's healing, and we provide the guidance and tools they need to protect their child's emotional wellbeing and support recovery effectively.
Teens
Adolescence is already a time of significant stress and upheaval. For teens who carry the additional weight of trauma, the challenges can feel overwhelming. Our therapists offer trauma-informed care tailored to the unique challenges adolescents face — addressing issues like depression, anxiety, anger, self-image, and relationship difficulties in a context that takes their experiences seriously.
We work to build strong therapeutic alliances with teens, recognizing that trust must be earned and that healing cannot be forced. Our work with teens centers on empowerment, resilience, growth, and the development of meaningful coping skills for navigating life's difficulties.
Adults
Adults experiencing the effects of trauma — whether recent or from the distant past — often feel isolated in their suffering. They may have spent years trying to outrun their pain, only to find that it follows them into their most important relationships and most critical decisions. Our trauma therapists provide a compassionate, supportive space for adults to finally address the wounds that have been shaping their lives.
We work with adults experiencing a wide range of trauma responses, including PTSD, complex PTSD, grief and loss, relationship trauma, and the long-term effects of childhood abuse. Our trauma-informed therapists understand that healing is not linear — it involves setbacks, breakthroughs, and the slow, meaningful work of building a life that feels worth living.
Our Approach to Trauma Therapy
The Terrebonne Group provides trauma therapy services rooted in clinical excellence and genuine compassion. Our trauma therapists are trained in evidence-based approaches that help clients process traumatic experiences, develop coping skills, and restore a sense of safety and security in their own lives.
Trauma-Informed Care
Everything we do is grounded in trauma-informed principles. That means we understand how trauma shapes the brain, body, and behavior — and we design our counseling services accordingly. A trauma-informed approach prioritizes safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. We never push clients to go further or faster than they're ready for. Your healing unfolds at your own pace.
Our therapists create environments where clients feel genuinely safe — physically and emotionally. We recognize that for many trauma survivors, even the act of seeking mental health support requires enormous courage. We honor that courage by providing a non judgmental space in which you can show up exactly as you are.
EMDR Therapy
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing — commonly known as EMDR therapy — is one of the most well-researched and effective treatments available for trauma and PTSD. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their emotional charge. After EMDR, many clients find that distressing memories no longer feel as vivid or overwhelming, and that the beliefs they held about themselves — "I'm not safe," "It was my fault," "I'm broken" — begin to soften and shift.
Our therapists incorporate EMDR into individualized treatment plans alongside other evidence-based approaches, ensuring that each client receives the level and type of support that is right for their unique situation.
Psychodynamic and Relational Therapy
For many clients, trauma is deeply woven into patterns of relating — to themselves, to others, and to the world. Our psychologists and therapists draw on psychodynamic and relational approaches to help clients explore how past experiences continue to live in the present. This kind of therapy doesn't just target symptoms; it addresses the underlying wounds that give rise to them.
In sessions, clients are encouraged to explore feelings, examine patterns in their relationships, and develop new ways of understanding themselves. The therapeutic relationship itself becomes a space for healing — one in which clients experience being seen, heard, and cared for, often for the first time.
Healing Is Possible
We want you to know something important: no matter how long you’ve been living with the effects of trauma, healing is possible. People who once felt completely defined by their pain — by violence, by grief, by abuse, by loss — go on to build lives of meaning, connection, genuine growth, and even joy. That transformation doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen alone. But healing, peace, and a life that feels worth living — those things are within reach.
Our therapists are honored to walk alongside clients on that journey. We bring clinical expertise, warmth, and deep respect for the courage it takes to seek support. Whether you’re just beginning to acknowledge the impact of trauma on your mental health, or you’ve been in therapy before and are looking for a team that can go deeper — we’re here.
Our practice serves adults, teens, and children throughout Greater New Orleans and across Louisiana through both in-person and teletherapy services. Our counseling services are available on an out-of-network basis, and we are happy to help you navigate the insurance reimbursement process.

Frequently-Asked Questions About Trauma Therapy
How do I know if I need trauma therapy?
If you find yourself struggling with anxiety, depression, anger, numbness, or relationship difficulties — and if these struggles seem connected to difficult experiences in your past — trauma therapy may be the right fit. You don't need a formal diagnosis to seek support. Many people seek therapy simply because they want to feel better and live more fully. Our trauma therapists will work with you to understand your history and determine the most appropriate approach to care.
How long does trauma therapy take?
There is no single answer to this question. Some clients find meaningful relief in a relatively limited number of sessions, while others benefit from longer-term work that goes deeper into patterns and underlying wounds. The pace of healing is different for every person. What matters most is that you feel supported throughout the process and that your sessions are helping you move toward the life you want.
What is the difference between PTSD and complex PTSD?
PTSD typically develops in response to a specific traumatic event, such as an accident, assault, or natural disaster. Complex PTSD, sometimes called CPTSD, tends to develop in response to prolonged or repeated trauma — such as ongoing childhood abuse, domestic violence, or neglect. People with complex PTSD often struggle with emotion regulation, self esteem, identity, and relationships in addition to the more classic PTSD symptoms. Our therapists are experienced in treating both.
Do you work with children and families affected by trauma?
Yes. We work with children, teens, and adults, as well as families navigating the impact of trauma together. Social work and family-centered care are central to how we support healing in younger clients, and we believe that children heal most effectively when their families are involved in the process.
Is teletherapy available for trauma counseling?
Yes. We offer teletherapy services throughout Louisiana, making our trauma-informed counseling accessible to clients who are not able to attend in-person sessions. Many clients find that teletherapy offers a level of comfort and flexibility that actually supports the healing process.
